Halo: Co Armagh actor living boyhood dreams in series inspired by hit Xbox game

Growing up, actor Ryan McParland spent much of his free time playing the video game Halo with friends.
After school and a kickabout, the Mullaghbawn man called with a pal to play the title on his Xbox.
Some 20 years later, Ryan, who has appeared in 6 Degrees, Derry Girls, Good Vibrations and the award-winning short Rough, is starring in a new Paramount Plus series based on the game, one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time.
The nine-part Halo, which includes Steven Spielberg as an executive producer, was filmed in Budapest before, during and after the pandemic. It launched in the US earlier this year before landing in Europe last month.
Ryan is still tweaking that he’s part of “The Stuff of Dreams,” a multi-million dollar US production.
“Growing up, I watched big American productions starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. I was totally mesmerized by them,” he said.
“I remember thinking I’d like to be in something like that, so it’s so surreal and special to get a role in a big adaptation of a video game I used to play with school friends. I would have played a lot of video games as a kid, but Halo was on Xbox and I had a PlayStation, so I went to my buddy who had an Xbox and played it.
“Funnily enough, I recently reconnected with this old friend. I met him when I came home after filming. We talked about Halo while playing football, that was great too.”
Ryan auditioned for the role three years ago after joining London agency The Independent Talent Group.
He was “super nervous” about the audition but felt it had gone well and was delighted when he received a call a month later to say he’d landed the part.

The 30-year-old plays Adun, Dr. Catherine Halsey, played by Natasha McElhone. After seeing the actress, whose parents are from Donegal, in films such as Ronin and Solaris, Ryan was thrilled to work with her.
“Dr. Halsey is such an iconic character in Halo. In almost all of my scenes, I’m with her and another character whose name I won’t reveal,” he said. “It was such a pinch moment to meet Natascha. We got along very well. We’re both forensic in our approach to our roles.
“Adun and Dr. Halsey work closely together to understand the significance of an artifact unearthed and the reason for the alliance [the antagonists] are so interested. A huge war is raging against the Alliance, and Dr. Halsey tries to protect humanity.
“Watching Natascha work was amazing and we became good friends along the way.”

Another perk of the job was that he was allowed to keep his accent. While initially auditioning with an American brogue, director Otto Bathurst liked his Northern Irish accent so much that he asked him to use it.
“That was another surreal moment,” Ryan said. “It’s not often that I get to use my accent on such a highly anticipated show.
“I hope it’s too much for the people of this island to hear a local accent on such a massive American show.”

Ryan McParland is still pinching himself
Ryan, who splits his time between London and Mullaghbawn, got his big break in 2012’s Good Vibrations and has appeared in Kissing Candice and Calm with Horses.
He also played traveler Jonjo in Derry Girls and starred in Adam Patterson and Declan Lawn’s award-winning short Rough. Next week he’s heading to London to film a new project for the BBC about the rise of grime music. He’s also landed a role in a new film about homelessness in Manchester.
“I’ve been very fortunate in my roles and I owe a lot to theater because I learned on the job,” Ryan said.
“I never went to drama school, but the training I received at the Abbey in Dublin and the Lyric and Mac theaters in Belfast was invaluable. I still can’t quite believe I’m on this £200m show.
“Coming from a small town like Mullaghbawn, it’s the stuff of dreams.”
