Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders has reported on how Diogo Jota reacted to rumors linking Sadio Mane with a move to Bayern Munich last season.
Lijnders recently published a book called ‘Intensity’ which gives an insight into Liverpool Football Club. He vividly described how Jota confronted Mane when the team first saw the rumors on TV.
Here’s what Lijnders said about Jota’s reaction to Manes’ departure rumors in his book (via HITC):
“There were rumors that Bayern wanted to sign Sadio. During breakfast, Diogo confronted Sadio while watching the news on Sky. Trent sat next to him and we both started laughing when I said Jota might be a scouser. He confronts without hesitation.”
Mane left the Reds for a fee of around £35m earlier in the summer to join German giants Bayern Munich. The Senegalese striker had just one year left on his contract with Liverpool before joining Bayern Munich.
Mane scored his first official goal for Bayern on Saturday 30 July in the 5-3 win over RB Leipzig in the DFL Supercup.
Liverpool, meanwhile, replaced Mane with 23-year-old Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez, who they signed from Portuguese side SL Benfica. Nunez came in for an initial fee of £64million. However, various add-ons could make him the Reds’ most expensive player in their history.
Like Mane, Nunez scored his first official goal for his new side in his debut appearance. The striker scored the third goal in the Reds’ 3-1 win over Manchester City in the FA Community Shield on 30 July.
Diogo Jota signs a new contract with Liverpool
Diogo Jota, meanwhile, became the youngest Liverpool player to sign a new contract this summer. According to Sky Sports, the Portuguese forward has signed a new five-year deal that will keep him at Anfield until the summer of 2027.
Jota had an incredible 2021/22 season for the Reds. The 25-year-old striker has scored 21 goals and provided eight assists in 55 appearances in all competitions.
It’s worth noting that Jota is currently recovering from a hamstring injury that kept him out of both preseason and the Community Shield.
Jurgen Klopp wants him back as soon as possible. The Portuguese forward is useful in attack due to his versatility. Jota can play as a center forward or on the left wing.
