Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker has slammed Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, claiming he shouldn’t be in the England team.
Alexander-Arnold has been heavily criticized by fans and pundits alike this season for his lethargic approach to defense. While the Englishman is known for his attacking skills, his defensive skills have been rather poor this season.
The right-back has scored twice in nine games so far this season but the Reds have won just three of their eight games in all competitions.
Speaking to Be My Bet about Alexander-Arnold’s chances of making the England squad for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar, Parker said:
“He can’t be on the team. He can’t be on the team because he’s bad defensively, not just bad defensively, won’t be bothered defensively. He’s lethargic, he doesn’t bother to defend himself. He jogs back, doesn’t show enthusiasm and doesn’t train his feet hard. He only cares about being Mr Assist or scoring goals.”
“And if anyone can tell me otherwise, they’d have to work really hard to tell me otherwise. He suits Liverpool, but Liverpool allow him. But we’ve already seen this season that they’ve been caught in almost every single game because of that situation.”
Parker further claimed that Alexander-Arnold would not come to another top team like Manchester City. He said:
“He couldn’t play for any other big team the way he plays. If you look at Manchester City, he couldn’t play there. He wouldn’t be good enough for Pep. He would want more from him.”
“He didn’t study. He got caught and got away with it because of Liverpool’s success. And now we see Liverpool are not riding the crest of the wave at the moment. And now people see it. When people didn’t want to see Liverpool winning games.”
Alexander-Arnold has recorded 62 assists and 14 goals in 235 games in all competitions for the club so far. He will compete with the likes of Kieran Trippier, Reece James and Kyle Walker for the right-back position in England’s squad for the upcoming World Cup.
Upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures could perhaps provide a clue as to whether Alexander-Arnold is part of Gareth Southgate’s plans.
Who will Liverpool play next?
The Reds are currently seventh in the Premier League table and second in their UEFA Champions League group.
They will next host Brighton & Hove Albion and Rangers on October 1st and October 4th respectively. Jurgen Klopp’s side then meet current Premier League leaders Arsenal on 9 October.
The Reds will also play Rangers away on October 12 before hosting rivals Manchester City on October 16.
