To address the issues voiced by voice actors and players alike, Hellblade developer Ninja Theory has confirmed that it will not be using AI technology to replace voice actors in its video game.
In the past, a recent report came from the data center of Altered AI, a company working to enable game developers to “create believable speech performances without the human need” to generate voices. This new technology allows developers to easily record what they want, along with the right emphasis, and it generates power for in-game use.
Ninja Theory was listed in the report in a category of developers using Altered AI’s technology, leading to concerns that authentic human performance would not be present in the studio’s games like Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II.
However, the developer confirmed that’s not the case and explained how he actually uses AI on Twitter.
The developer said that this AI technology is used for placeholder content. It makes it easier for us to understand everything like timing and placement in the early stages of development,” the developer wrote. “We then work with real actors. They are the basis of our own life.”
no For clarity, we use AI to replace placeholder content for each page to understand the timing and placement of the initial development stages. As soon as possible, we work with real actors whose performances are the focus of our stories.

Automated speech output is becoming increasingly common in the entertainment industry. On the television side, The Mandalorian showrunners decided to synthesize Luke Skywalker’s voice using old Mark Hamill recordings instead of casting a new actor.
However, it’s not clear how much impact this AI technology will have on the video game voice actor industry. According to the report, actors fear studios adopting Altered AI will discourage actors and reduce the quality of vocal performances. However, proponents of the technology argue that it could mean more work for the actors. For example, one studio was reportedly planning to remove voice acting in its game, so it decided to use AI.
