LONDON, ENGLAND - JULY 5: Brett Goldstein attends British Gala Screening

The end credits scene of Thor: Love and Thunder introduced a brand new character to the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Hercules, played by Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein. It feels a little silly to call him “new” since Hercules is one of the most well-known Greek gods (and yes, we’re eagerly awaiting the live-action Disney Hercules adaptation of course). But in Marvel Comics, he has his own unique relationship with the superheroes fans know and love, and that could have big implications for what role Hercules will play in the MCU going forward.

Hercules in Marvel Comics

Hercules was introduced in 1965 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby as Thor’s rival in Marvel Comics. From then on, he became a frequent guest star in Thor issues. However, one of his earliest and most well-known Marvel fights was with the Hulk, and Hercules’ own strength, skill, and hothead are often compared to those of the big green dude. Hercules has continued to appear frequently in Thor and Avengers comics and has even directed his own comic titles. In the comics, as in mythology, he is the son of Zeus and Alcmena. Like the other Olympian gods, Hercules cannot be killed normally and is able to heal his own wounds.

Although Thor and Hercules started out as adversaries, over time they became close friends and allies. Hercules was even a member of the Avengers at certain points in Marvel Comics history.

Hercules in the MCU

As revealed in one of the end credits scenes of Thor: Love and Thunder, Hercules is played by Goldstein. Right now, his mission is to fight Thor on behalf of his father Zeus (Russell Crowe), but it’s possible his goals will change over time. It’s also not clear if he’ll be up against Chris Hemsworth’s Thor or Natalie Portman’s. It’s also possible that Hemsworth will take a step back from his role as Thor and instead, Hercules will be the MCU’s new great divine presence. In a Hercules story in the comics, he clashed with the Celestials, also known as the main antagonist in “Ms. Marvel” performed on Disney+. So it’s quite possible that Hercules’ next appearance won’t be in a fifth Thor movie, but in the Captain Marvel sequel The Marvels, in which Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) returns.
