“Here we go”, “Following reports from numerous media outlets”

Chelsea have appeared to be targeting Brighton & Hove Albion along with Fabrizio Romano after an agreement was reached to sign Marc Cucurella from the Seagulls.

Chelsea have officially announced their fifth signing of the summer transfer window. They have acquired Cucurella’s services from Premier League rivals Brighton in a deal worth £62million.

The Blues’ statement has ended a brief transfer saga involving the Spain international. The player was the subject of serious interest from Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City before the London giants stepped in.

Manchester City exited the deal after Brighton rejected a £40million offer. This allowed Chelsea to sign the former Barcelona left-back.

Romano then revealed on Wednesday that Thomas Tuchel’s side have agreed a deal with Brighton to sign Cucurella. However, the Seagulls quickly took to social media to dismiss these claims.

In a statement from the club on Twitter, they said:

“Contrary to inaccurate reports from various media outlets tonight, no agreement has been reached with any club to sell Marc Cucurella.”

However, Romano stuck to his guns, claiming Cucurella was on his way to Stamford Bridge. The transfer guru has now been proven right, Chelsea confirmed the transfer today (5 August).

The Blues also took the opportunity to jibe at Brighton by releasing a statement similar to that made by the Seagulls on Wednesday. Announcing Cucurella’s signing, they wrote on Twitter:

“Following reports from numerous media outlets this week, we can confirm that an agreement has been reached with Brighton and Hove Albion to sign Marc Cucurella.”

Romano, who was criticized and ridiculed after Brighton’s statement, also got involved. Among Chelsea’s posts, he wrotealong with a smiling face with open hands emoji:

“Here we go.”

Chelsea’s Levi Colwill joins Brighton on loan

It was widely reported that the Blues could offer Levi Colwill in a trade for Cucurella. However, there were also hints that the teenager’s transfer is set to come unrelated to the deal for the left-back.

Regardless, the centre-back has now completed his move to Brighton. The Seagulls have loaned the 19-year-old’s services from the Blues until the end of the 2022-23 season.

Colwill spent last season on loan at Championship club Huddersfield Town. He played 32 games in all competitions for the Terriers, contributing to three goals.
