‘Horrific’ impact of third lockdown on schoolchildren’s physical and mental health revealed

Andy Pope, who oversaw the survey, said there was an exceptional response from schools. “With over 2,600 responses from schools in one week, SAM has a robust data set to work with partners to target key areas of recovery,” he said.

“They received the feedback immediately and are therefore in a great position to work with schools to make maximum impact during this semester.”

National School Sport Week takes place from 19 June and a new Active Recovery Hub was launched last month by the Youth Sports Trust and Sport England to help children meet the recommended minimum daily activity time of 60 minutes.

“The stark picture this research has painted underscores the tremendous toll the pandemic has taken on young people’s well-being and reinforces why a focus on sport and activity must be an integral part of their recovery,” said Ali Oliver, the managing director of Youth Sports Trust.

“Many schools are doing an incredible job of reaping the benefits of active recreation that builds on this year’s National School Sports Week. However, the focus on young people’s recovery will extend well beyond this semester and it is therefore vital that schools have the reassurance they need about next year’s funding.

“In the longer term, we really want to see a common national strategy for our young people to be the happiest and most active in the world.”

The survey follows new data from Swim England which shows two million children missed swimming last year and another 250,000 children will not be able to swim 25 meters unaided. ‘Horrific’ impact of third lockdown on schoolchildren’s physical and mental health revealed
