Northumbria Police confirmed they received a report from emergency services about the welfare of a man in the Newminster Close area of Houghton-le-Spring at 11.25am on Wednesday (September 6).
Officers said they found a man who suffered a serious but non-life-threatening injury to his leg.
They said the injury was likely caused by a “homemade device.”

They also confirmed he had been taken to hospital.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “At 11.25am today (Wednesday) officers were alerted by emergency services to a report of concerns about the welfare of a man in the Newminster Close area of Houghton-le-Spring.”
“Officers attended the scene and found a man who had suffered a serious but non-life-threatening injury to his leg. He has since been taken to hospital.
“Upon investigation at the address, officers discovered it appeared to be a home-made device that had caused the injury.

“A full investigation into the discovery has been launched and, as a precautionary measure, officers are being supported by bomb disposal experts to ensure the device is safely removed.”
A NEAS spokesman said: “At 10.56am we received a call with concerns about the welfare of a resident at a private address in Newminster Close in Houghton le Spring.”
“We have sent a hazardous area response team, an emergency paramedic, an ambulance crew and a clinical team leader.
“The police were also on site. We brought a patient to the hospital.”

Police are currently still on scene and it is not believed there is any major risk to the public.
Anyone with concerns is asked to speak to a duty officer.
