Houghton-le-Spring: Man in hospital after “serious” injury

Northumbria Police confirmed they received a report from emergency services about the welfare of a man in the Newminster Close area of ​​Houghton-le-Spring at 11.25am on Wednesday (September 6).

Officers said they found a man who suffered a serious but non-life-threatening injury to his leg.

They said the injury was likely caused by a “homemade device.”

They also confirmed he had been taken to hospital.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “At 11.25am today (Wednesday) officers were alerted by emergency services to a report of concerns about the welfare of a man in the Newminster Close area of ​​Houghton-le-Spring.”

“Officers attended the scene and found a man who had suffered a serious but non-life-threatening injury to his leg. He has since been taken to hospital.

“Upon investigation at the address, officers discovered it appeared to be a home-made device that had caused the injury.

“A full investigation into the discovery has been launched and, as a precautionary measure, officers are being supported by bomb disposal experts to ensure the device is safely removed.”

A NEAS spokesman said: “At 10.56am we received a call with concerns about the welfare of a resident at a private address in Newminster Close in Houghton le Spring.”

“We have sent a hazardous area response team, an emergency paramedic, an ambulance crew and a clinical team leader.

“The police were also on site. We brought a patient to the hospital.”

Police are currently still on scene and it is not believed there is any major risk to the public.
