House Democrats on the Oversight Committee on Tuesday voted against a Republican resolution that would have ordered President Joe Biden’s administration to release documents related to Hunter Biden’s business deals.
The “Resolution of Investigation,” led by Rep. James Comer (R-KY), the top Republican on the Oversight Committee, would have directed Biden’s administration to provide a wealth of documents on the Biden family’s foreign operations, including those involving the president’s son Hunter.
Although all 19 Republicans voted in favor of the resolution, 23 Democrats voted to end the resolution after just two hours of debate, according to CNN.
Comer accused the Biden family of “accessing the highest levels of government for self-enrichment,” CNN reported.
“If Democrats vote against this resolution, they will continue their coordinated effort to protect a potentially compromised president from the necessary scrutiny by Congress,” Comer said. “We need to look at the Biden family’s international business plans to determine if there is a national security threat.”
Comer previously sent a letter to the US Treasury Department asking for more information about the finances of Hunter and his business partners.
Rep. Carolyn Maloney, who chairs the House Oversight Committee, called the resolution a “naked partisan effort” and accused Republicans of being “obsessed” with Hunter Biden.
The oversight committee’s proposed investigative order into the Biden family’s business dealings comes after reports that House Republicans are preparing to investigate Hunter Biden if they regain majority control of the House after November’s midterm elections.
“The House Oversight Committee has broad oversight powers under House Rules,” said a GOP Oversight Committee staffer Washington Post. “At the next Congress, Republicans on the Oversight Committee will continue their investigation into the Biden family’s suspicious business dealings and use the power of the gavel to obtain answers for the American people.”
