How many cigarettes can I bring into the UK from abroad?

Travelers returning to the UK need to be aware that they can only bring a certain amount of cigarettes with them without having to pay tax.

If they exceed their allowance, they must declare the goods and pay taxes and duties.

According to government guidelines, the tobacco allowance is:

  • 200 cigarettes
  • 100 cigarillos
  • 50 cigars
  • 250 grams of tobacco
  • 200 tobacco sticks for electronic tobacco heaters

You can split this pocket money – so you could bring 100 cigarettes and 25 cigars (both half your pocket money).

How many cigarettes can I take abroad from the UK?

If you are entering the EU from the UK, you can bring goods within the limits listed below free of VAT and excise duty, provided they are not intended for resale.

There is a higher or lower limit depending on the EU country you are visiting.

Lower limit

  • 200 cigarettes
  • 100 cigarillos
  • 50 cigars
  • 250 grams of tobacco

higher limit

  • 40 cigarettes
  • 20 cigarillos
  • 10 cigars
  • 50 grams of tobacco

It is important to check what applies to an EU country as it applies either to them or to land and sea travelers (Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Slovakia) or to all travelers (Estonia and Romania) can apply.

Again, you can split this allowance.

What is the excise duty on cigarettes?

As of October 2021, excise duty on cigarettes in the UK is £262.90 per 1,000 cigarettes plus 16.5% of the retail price.

The duty rate for cigars is £327.92 per barrel and for hand-rolled tobacco £302.32 per kg.

Are cigarettes cheaper abroad?

Since the UK has left the EU, cigarette prices at airports are cheaper due to Duty Free.

France, Spain, Greece and Italy offer discounts of between 20 and 24 percent.

The cheapest tobacco products are in Dubai, where 200 Marlboro Gold cigarettes cost £22.56 – a third the price of the same pack at Heathrow and 500% cheaper than in a UK supermarket.

A spokesman for the British Medical Association said: “Anything that increases the availability of tobacco is a negative public health move.

“Every year in England there are almost half a million hospital admissions for smoking in England and almost 80,000 deaths a year.”
