How much does it cost to make a Sunday roast at home?
The cost of living crisis is no longer breaking news, but it continues to impact households across the country, from energy consumption to grocery bills.
Now that autumn is here and winter is well and truly upon us, the traditional dish is set to appear on dinner tables across the UK.
But how has the popular British staple weathered the recent food inflation?
The cost of homemade Sunday roast
The food delivery service, Getir, answered this very question by comparing prices for traditional roast dishes from August 2022 to August 2023.
By analyzing the prices of supermarket branded foods in major UK supermarkets supermarkets such as Tesco, Aldi, Waitrose, M&S and ASDAthe team gave consumers insight into how much the price of the popular dinner has changed inflation.
Getir reported that the cost of a simple roast dinner for a family of four (with a medium chicken, parsnips, carrots, stuffing, potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and sauce) has increased by 12.81% in the last 12 months.
Simply put, the cost of your Sunday roast has risen on average from £10.58 (£2.65 per head) to £11.94 (£2.98 per head).
If you prefer pork, that’s a completely different story.
Research from Getir has revealed that there has been a whopping 16.03% increase – making it the meat with the biggest price increase.
The only roast cut to see a price fall over the year is a bag of supermarket own-brand carrots, which now costs 2.76% less than 12 months ago.
It’s worth noting that, according to Getir, chicken remains the cheapest roast dinner option this fall.
A whole medium chicken costs on average £4.35.

Although it is the cheapest, its price has still increased by 12.12% in the last year.
For beef lovers, the price of a roast has risen by 6.9% since August 2022 – meaning the feast costs an average of over £20 for a family of four.
The only roast meat to see a price decline over the past year is lamb, which saw a notable decline of 6.64%.
When it comes to side dishes, prices have also risen significantly for some of our other favorite ingredients, from Yorkshire pud to gravy.
The cost of a 170g pack of sage and onion stuffing mix has increased by 30.96% from 68p to 89p.
This makes it the roast ingredient that has seen the biggest price increase in the last year.
Meanwhile, the average price of supermarket own brand gravy granules (170g) has risen from £1.09 to £1.41, an average increase of a whopping 29.67%.
However, the price of Bisto sauce has increased by an incredible 47.98% in the last 12 months.
The average price has risen from £1.98 to a staggering £2.93.
The news comes as Getir introduces three fresh roast dinner packages, consisting of a free-range chicken and three free sides.
The three 11-pound packages all contain HG Walter free-range whole chicken (1.4 kg) and a selection of sides to choose from.
The packages are designed for a family of four and can be delivered via the Getir app.
