How Phil Spencer honored his parents after a fatal accident

The 53-year-old’s parents died on their farm in Littlebourne, Kent, in August.

Anne and David were on their way to lunch when their car fell off a bridge and into a river.

But now Phil’s Channel 4 co-host Kirstie Allsopp said Phil and his family “all went to the pub for lunch” where his parents went before the tragic incident occurred.

Speaking on an episode of the BBC podcast Newscast on Saturday (August 2), she revealed: “(Phil) has a wonderful family and they’re very, very close and are all together.”

“In fact, his sister got married yesterday, which is what they decided to do, and today they are all going to the pub for lunch. The same pub his parents were heading to when they died.

“He’s very stoic and pragmatic, and he feels strongly that his parents getting together was the right thing to do.”

Phil Spencer remembers his brother trying to rescue their parents from the water

Phil recently paid tribute to his mother and father on Instagram, saying: “It is very sad that both of my amazing parents passed away on Friday (August 15).”

“As a family, we all try to hold on to the fact that mom and dad left together and neither will ever have to grieve the loss of the other. Which is a blessing in itself.

“Although they had both been in very good shape in the previous days (hence the sudden idea of going out to lunch), the mother’s Parkinson’s disease and the father’s dementia had worsened and the long-term future was set to be challenging.

“So much so that just a week ago Mom said to me that she had come to terms with the idea, ‘Now it looks like we’re probably going to go together.’ And that’s what they did.

“This is what God had planned for them – and it was a good plan.

“The car, which was traveling very slowly, plunged over a bridge on the farm driveway and plunged headfirst into the river. There were no physical injuries and I highly doubt they would have resisted at all – they would have held hands under the water and slipped away quietly.

“Her carer was in the car and was able to climb out of a back window, so the alarm went off quite quickly.

“Like many farmers – my brother had a pocket knife and was able to cut the seat belts – he pulled them out of the river, but they never regained consciousness.

“Although incredibly sad and shocked, the whole family recognizes that if there can ever be such a thing as a happy ending, this is it.

“It feels terrible at the moment, but after almost 60 years of marriage, it will be a comfort in the future to die together on the farm they loved so much.

“Mom Dad is together, and this is exactly where they wanted to be.”
