BRITS flying to Spain in the next six months can get free priority boarding and speedy security checks, depending on the airline.
The offer is part of British Airways’ new passport-free travel trial to be rolled out at Heathrow Airport.
They are the first UK airline to test biometric technology.
Passengers who check in will be asked to scan their face, passport and boarding pass on their cell phone before the flight.
Upon arrival at the airport, passengers can use the Smart Bio-Pod cameras to have their identity verified in three seconds – without having to show their passport.
Passengers who sign up for the trial, currently for Brits only, traveling on BA to Malaga via Terminal 5 at Heathrow will receive free priority boarding and free fast track security screening.
This means families have a much easier and quicker journey when boarding their flight.
And all Covid restrictions have been scrapped for Brits traveling to Spain, making holidaying in the country even easier.
David Breeze, operations transformation manager at British Airways, said it hopes to deliver a “smarter and smoother airport experience” as well as “reducing the time it takes us to board the plane”.
If the trial is successful, it is expected to expand to more international flights.
It’s not the only method being trialled at airports – Britons returning to the UK will soon be able to skip the long passport queues thanks to new technology.
Earlier this year, the Home Office announced Brits could instead use facial recognition to travel via “contactless smart corridors” at airports.
Vacationers can whiz through the airport without passport control at the border.
The plans will be piloted in 2024 with hopes of being fully operational by 2025.
A similar scheme is already in use at the Eurostar terminals in Paris, Amsterdam and Brussels.
Other attempts include next-generation scanners that will allow passengers to keep their shoes on at airport security checkpoints.
