Huge python blocks road in Florida Everglades

Can Florida be normal for just once?

I’ve lived in Florida for about 4 years and one under-the-radar story that has made its way into the mainstream is an infestation of an invasive species taking over the Everglades.

It has been claimed for years that giant Burmese pythons have been seen in the southern swamps, but it wasn’t until the 1990’s that the first official sighting was confirmed. They’re not native to the state, but once a decent number of them settled in the wildlife-rich area, the population absolutely exploded.

An accurate estimate of how many call Florida home is difficult to come by due to their reclusive nature, but some wildlife experts now estimate that over 1 million pythons live in South Florida, which has absolutely devastated all kinds of native animals. Over 90% of all small game in the Everglades has been wiped off the map and the predators are now known to actually kill alligatorsformerly at the top of the food chain in the swamps.

There are so many of these snakes now that people encounter them without looking, like the other day when a monster stopped traffic on a road crossing the Glades.

In a video attributed to Kymberly Clark, a 10-foot-long python is seen making its way across the street, stopping traffic and prompting motorists to get out of their cars for a closer look.

I mean, heck, that’s so big it honestly doesn’t make any sense. That just cools down the water and the grass? Terrible.

The snake will eventually go off the road, but my goodness, can you imagine not seeing it in time and hitting it like a speed bump? Could have been a disaster, especially when the car went off the road and into the undergrowth with who knows how many more of these monsters.
