The COVID-19 pandemic is terrorizing the world and taking its human toll. Unfortunately, many were unable to fight the dangerous virus, and many more are still fighting for their lives in hospitals.
Numerous tragic stories have saddened the world, and the video below shows another heartbreaking farewell. JoAnn and Sam Reck were separated for four long months after 30 years of love and marriage.
Because JoAnn lived in a nursing home in Lakeland, Florida, all visitors, including her husband, were not allowed to see her. So Sam was sitting on the balcony of his second floor apartment and his lover was talking to him from the garden below.
This practice earned them the nickname “Romeo and Juliet”.
However, JoAnn was recently diagnosed with COVID-19 and developed a fever, cough and fatigue. She had written a living will ordering doctors not to try to revive her with ventilators.
Therefore, the staff at her family’s hospital explained that there was little they could do and advised them to make her as comfortable as possible.
Her son, Scott Hooper, said he told Sam not to enter his mother’s room, and although he initially agreed, he “later said he had to go, whatever the results.”
This determined husband risked his own life but chose to be with her one last time. In love there is no fear!
In her sickroom he said with tears in his eyes, holding her hand:
“You don’t recognize me with all that shit on my face, but it’s Sam. I love you honey, I love you so much. After all these months I can finally hold your hand.”
JoAnn died hours after this encounter.
“Here’s this 90-year-old man, he risked his life to visit my mother, but that was his choice, that’s his freedom to do that. He knew what he was risking.”
His mother was diagnosed with dementia a year ago.
“COVID hit her so hard and so fast. Anyone who has been involved with this knows what I’m talking about because they don’t always remember you or the situation they’re in, or they think something weird is happening and you’re trying to tell them that it is not so.”
“It was my wife who took the video and I remember everyone in the room crying. I remember looking at my wife, she was crying so hard she could hardly hold the camera. That was a very emotional moment.”
