Husband kills girlfriend, then sends incriminating texts to detective meant for his wife – Women After 40

A Florida man is behind bars after police say he sent incriminating texts to a Marion County detective because he thought he was sending the messages to his wife.

“I think they’re going to arrest me,” David Romig, 52, texted the Marion County Sheriff’s Detective last month persons.

The suspect allegedly wanted to send the text message to his wife after his girlfriend Sally Kaufmann-Ruff, 64, was found murdered at 10499 SW 122nd Court in a Dunnellon home she shared with the suspect. Romig reportedly sent a second text message to the detective, repeating that he thought the authorities were arresting him.

“I think they will be arrested.”

Marion County authorities said the victim was found at the home with a single gunshot wound to the head. Sheriff’s investigators said Romig staged the home to make it appear as if an intruder had broken in. The suspect reportedly told authorities he fought the intruder, but the story he told did not match the evidence at the scene.

When confronted with the evidence during an interview with MCSO detectives on Monday, Romig reportedly admitted to killing Kauffman-Ruff, saying: “He knew he had passed out while standing in the kitchen, with all the lights on and saw Sally lying in bed snoring and shot in the head.”

Romig later allegedly admitted that he staged the house to look like an invasion had taken place after realizing he had passed out and shot his girlfriend. He previously told authorities he has been living with the victim for a little over two years and is the sole beneficiary of her life insurance policy, the authorities said Ocala Star Banner.

When confronted with the text messages, the suspect said he was nervous and accidentally sent messages intended for his wife to the wrong person. Why the married man lived with his girlfriend and not with his wife is still unclear.

The police report also shows that the suspect sent his wife another text message, stating that he would kill himself if he were responsible for Kaufmann-Ruff’s death.
