Hyderabad FC vs Chennaiyin FC: 3 things we learned

Hyderabad FC drew Chennaiyin FC 1-1 in game 14 of the 2022-23 ISL season on Thursday (12 January) in Hyderabad. It was Chennaiyin FC’s 13th game of the season.

Defending champions Hyderabad FC started the season well and were top of the table for a long time. The Nizams came into play second in the table and won their last game against Goa FC 3-1.

The Marina Machans didn’t have the best start to the season as they finished seventh in the points table. They played their previous match 2-2 against Jamshedpur FC.

The game started with both teams trying to control midfield and create more chances. The game was even, with both sides creating a few chances. Javier Siverio had a good chance in the 17th minute, but his header went straight to the keeper. Chennaiyin FC created some good chances but the likes of Vincy Barreto and Petar Sliskovic missed the chances that came their way.

The scoreboard was 0-0 at half-time.

The guests started the second half as a better team and created better and better chances.

Chennaiyin FC finally took the lead in the 57th minute when Petar Sliskovic headed in Aakash Sangwan’s corner.

Marina Machans took over the game post and took the lead. The Nizams struggled to play their usual game.

Hyderabad FC were awarded a penalty in the 86th minute after Vafa bought Siverio in the box. Bartholomew Ogbeche converted flawlessly from the penalty spot.

Neither side managed to change the scoreboard in the final minutes.

The scoreboard was 1:1 at full-time.

With the draw, both teams remained exactly where they were before kick-off in the points table.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at three things we learned from today’s game.

#3 Hyderabad FC rarely have a dull game

Hyderabad FC has almost always entertained viewers with dazzling football for the last two seasons. Manuel Marquez’s team has played good football this season, managing to win ten games while only drawing one and losing two.

But today they were poor. It’s rare for the Nizams to have less possession compared to their opponents and today was such a rare day.

Thomas Brdaric’s team managed to keep the ball better than Manuel Marquez’s team.

Hyderabad FC were poor at creating chances today and a lack of midfield control was a key reason for such a lackluster performance. The Nizams had just two shots on target throughout the game and that’s not normal for Hyderabad FC.

They also struggled defensively and that was another aspect that caused them to perform poorly today.

Manuel Marquez hopes his side can return to form in the upcoming game if they continue to fight for the league shield.

#2 Chennaiyin FC shows brilliant football

Chennaiyin FC deserved to win today, but a small error in the 85th minute gave Hyderabad FC a penalty which allowed the Nizams to level. Chennaiyin FC was outstanding overall today.

They took the game to the hosts and didn’t let them dominate the action. Chennaiyin FC had the most possession and created the most chances.

If Chennaiyin FC had kept their composure they could have taken all three points today.

Brdaric will be disappointed with the way his side missed a late penalty but happy with the way they played.

Chennaiyin need to keep playing like this if they want to finish in the top six.

#1 Hyderabad FC needs to work on their consistency

Hyderabad FC are in contention for the title this season. They are in this race with Mumbai City FC, who have not lost this season and are currently leaders. Mumbai City FC are a point clear at the top and also have one game left that could widen the gap to four at the top.

Hyderabad FC narrowly missed out on the league title last season and it looks like they could miss out on the title again if they aren’t consistent enough.

The way Mumbai City FC played made it difficult for other teams to keep up with their pace. It’s in Hyderabad FC’s hands to stay in the running for the League Shield. However, they need to improve their consistency otherwise they might suffer in their upcoming games.

Build-up play along with midfield control was bad for the Nizams and they will try to improve that aspect in their next game.
