Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has admitted the Blues have no chance of signing Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski this summer. The Poland international has less than a year on his current contract with the Bundesliga giants.
Lewandowski is one of the best strikers in football history. He has won everything with Bayern in the last eight years and scored a lot of goals.
The Pole has made 375 appearances for Bayern in all competitions, scoring 344 goals and helping them to eight consecutive Bundesliga titles and a Champions League trophy, among other things.
The 33-year-old has expressed a desire to leave the club in the summer. Barcelona are the front runners to secure his services but the Blaugrana are yet to match Bayern’s assessment of the player.
Chelsea, who loaned Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan earlier this month, could use a player of Lewandowski’s caliber. However, Tuchel doesn’t think the Blues stand a chance of signing the forward this summer, not that he’s overly concerned about it.
The German shared his thoughts on the Lewandowski deal (via Fabrizio Romano):
“I don’t think we have a chance of signing Lewa but if there is a chance he’s one of the best nines. I think at the moment getting another great striker is not the first priority.
Raheem Sterling could be Chelsea’s only signing this summer
In recent interviews, Tuchel has made it clear that signing a new striker is not high on his list of priorities.
The Premier League team lost centre-backs Antonio Rüdiger and Andreas Christensen on free transfers to Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively. The German tactician is therefore more concerned with strengthening his team’s defence.
Chelsea have already signed central defender Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli (according to… Fabrizio Romano), but they may not be ready yet. With their focus on bringing on more defenders, the Blues may not be taking a step forward. The Blues have been linked with Manchester City defender Nathan Ake and PSG centre-back Presnel Kimpembe.
Raheem Sterling, who recently joined the Blues, could be their only offensive acquisition this summer. If so, we could see Sterling in a more aggressive role, emerging as the focal point of the west Londoners’ attack.
