“I know I could do better in the beginning, I’m not naive about that”

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk put on a solid performance to inspire the Netherlands to a 2-0 win over Poland in the UEFA Nations League yesterday (22 September). After the game, the centre-back admitted he hasn’t lived up to expectations at club level this season.

It goes without saying that Virgil van Dijk and his Liverpool colleagues have been far from at their best since the start of the season this summer. They are currently eighth in the Premier League table and have won just two of their six games in the English top flight.

Despite not being at his best in recent weeks, the centre-back set up the Netherlands squad for internationals this week. He seized the opportunity by helping his side stay clean against Poland.

After the game, the defender was critical as he gave an honest assessment of his recent performances at Liverpool. He has also spoken openly about the pressures he faces being a leader at both club and national team level.

Van Dijk said (via Voetbal International):

“I know I could do better at the beginning, I’m not naïve, I know very well when I make mistakes. I also know that I’m one of the most important players at the club and of course I feel committed to that responsibility here at Orange.”

“It’s a mental challenge. You get a lot on your roof. Many people forget that too, it’s not easy to act like that. We all try to show the best. In my case, if you’re one of the mainstays of the club, then you get the criticism you deserve. You have to deal with it and it’s not always easy, [but] I did great.”

🏆 Belgium, Poland, Netherlands and Wales have expressed interest in hosting the 2022/23 #NationsLeague Final. Hosts will be appointed in January 2023.

What next for Virgil van Dijk and Liverpool?

The centre-back will continue with the Netherlands national team for the remaining games in the international break. He is expected to lead the Netherlands’ defense when they take on Belgium in the final group game of the Nations League on Sunday (25 September).

Liverpool are set to return to the Premier League next weekend with a clash with Brighton & Hove Albion on October 1.
