I tried the new Dorito Sweet and Spicy BBQ chips and fans won’t be disappointed

There is a new one Doritos Taste in town folks. OK, actually not in there my city, as it turned out.

After the popular snack brand January 5 announcement his new Sweet&Tangy BBQ variant, I embarked on a long and initially fruitless search for these tempting chips. I’ve gone to Target, Stop&Shop, Rite Aid, Walgreens, and several local gas stations to no avail. I’ve scoured the Amazon and Walmart sites, and no.

Finally I discovered the new Doritos flavor for sale snacks com and I pounced and spent $5.59 for a bag of chips, plus $4.99 for shipping. Five days later, the new chips were all mine.

I was curious to see how this latest strain would fit into the long line of Doritos history that stretches further back than you might think. In fact, Doritos were created way back in 1966 by Frito-Lay, Arch West’s vice president of marketing, who says he was inspired by toasted tortillas he encountered while vacationing in Southern California The Washington Post. And over the past several decades, Doritos have become one of America’s most popular snack chips.

Given the ubiquity of Doritos today and the wide range of flavors that the chips come in, it’s hard to imagine that for two decades there were only two flavors of Doritos Snack Story: These are Taco and, from 1972, Nacho Cheese. Cool Ranch (later Cooler Ranch) joined the mix in 1986, and then, in the 1990s, the brand began introducing new flavors (and even new shapes) much more aggressively.

It was there, in that heady post-Cold War era, before 9/11, that I became a Doritos fan. Once a week, on my way home from school, I got to stop at a local 7-Eleven and buy some candy, a drink, some groceries (think Taquito), and a bagged snack. Almost without exception, this snack would be Doritos. This was the time Doritos tried out new forms like the 3D chip and flavors ranging from Jalapeño & Cheddar to Salsa Verde (both triumphing) and also some missteps like Chester’s Cheese with a Cheeto connection. Overall it was a good time eating Doritos.

There have been some really wild Doritos flavors launched over the years – After Dark Last Call Kebab and Collision’s Chicken Sizzler Zesty Salsa, for example – and there have been even bigger failures, like the Late Night All Nighter Cheeseburger created by the late Mr. West apparently spat after the tasting, according to his obituary.

As someone who might not eat as many fried and flavored tortilla chips these days, but who has a longstanding appreciation for the rich history (and flavor) of the Doritos brand, I want to tell you that the new Limited Edition Doritos Sweet&Tangy BBQ is no misstep is .

With the first bite, you get that unmistakable Doritos taste: the salty, savory umami flavor that lurks beneath all of the brand’s chips. Next you get the distinctive sweet and smoky grilled flavor – notes of brown sugar and molasses, vinegar, a vague tomato note and what we can only describe as spicy. And hey, if we look at the ingredients, what do we find between corn and MSG and whatnot? Yes, molasses, paprika, and what appears to be a heavier dose of tomato powder than the standard nacho cheese variety.

It’s only when your mouth is empty (probably after eating six to eight chips in quick succession, if not all at once) that you feel a hint of peppery spiciness. It’s not a hot sauce-like burn, but it’s a pleasantly lingering warmth.

If you like Doritos in general, you’ll probably like these chips. And if you like Doritos and that signature grilled flavor, plus a bit of heat, it’s almost a sure bet.

That’s good news for Doritos, as the brand is betting heavily on these chips, even featuring Sweet&Tangy BBQ chips in a commercial that will air during Super Bowl LVII on February 12ththe 23rdapprox Doritos was featured in a Super Bowl commercial.

In my eyes these chips were worth the effort and if I spot a bag on a store shelf I’ll snag it. Would I visit half a dozen stores and pay double the MSRP to order another bag online? Probably not. But if you’re a die-hard Doritos fan, you probably should, as the packaging says these are “limited-time” chips. Who knows if they’ll ever come back?
