“I want to knock her out”

Ritu Phogat is considered one of the best grapplers in mixed martial arts, but she doesn’t mind letting go of her hands as she welcomes Tiffany Teo to the women’s atomic weight division.

The Indian star will face off against former ONE women’s strawweight world title challenger at ONE 161: Petchmorakot vs. Tawanchai on September 29 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Phogat wants nothing more than to return to the Victory Column, and she believes an emphatic victory over Teo would put her closer to a shot at the ONE World Women’s Atomweight title.

In an interview with ONE Championship, Phogat said Teo was the perfect opponent for her to show off her improved punching power. She added that she will show the world that she is fully capable of smacking people’s webs and not just relying on her wrestling during matches.

“I’ve been trying to improve my hitting for the past three to four months and I’ll do my best to showcase my boxing and hitting against them. I want to KO them and show the world they saw my wrestling and floorplay, but I can also finish in one punch.”

Phogat was on a three-fight win streak prior to the final of the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix. However, her run ended when she lost by submission to Stamp Fairtex at ONE: Winter Warriors in December 2021.

Although she has favored a grind-out style in her recent bouts, “The Indian Tigress” was a headhunter for the first half of her ONE Championship career. Phogat has seven wins within the circle and three of those were knockout wins over Nam Hee Kim, Nou Srey Pov and Jomary Torres.

Teo, on the other hand, has elite levels in both Brazilian jiu-jitsu and boxing. The Singaporean star has four finishes in ONE championship, three by assist and one by KO.

The Interesting Story of Ritu Phogat and Tiffany Teo

The Ritu Phogat match appears to be one that dates back to the beginning of the year.

Teo, after submitting Meng Bo to ONE: Heavy Hitters in January 2022, told ONE Championship that she was ready to go to atomicweight and Ritu Phogat was the first fighter she thought of.

“I would love to [fight Ritu Phogat]. I think that would be a great matchup. I find [in terms of grappling] we’re pretty much even. I think Ritu makes sense at atomic weight right now. We both just got our win against the same girl [Meng Bo] so that should be fun.”

Fast-forward to almost nine months later, and the two fighters finally get to face each other in a circle.
