A DAD has explained how you can make sure you sit next to your kids on a plane — and it won’t cost you anything.
Father Taryn White said he was on a flight recently when he was separated from his children after his previous booking was changed.
His first tip was to use the free online check-in.
Most airlines allow passengers to check in at least 24 hours before their flight, which Taryn recommends doing as soon as possible.
He said on CN Traveler, “Online check-in not only gives you access to your seat reservation and other available seat options, it also gives you a better chance of being placed in an earlier boarding group on some airlines.”
Taryn said it also helps if you’re all “booked on the same reservation,” although you can also ask to link reservations if they’re not.
He also says that you shouldn’t let your flight arrive at the airport until the last minute.
All flight problems can be solved if given time, he said.
Otherwise, it may mean asking if you can change your seat before boarding when you go to the helpdesk or gate agent.
He added: “If your family is not seated together and you cannot change your seats at the kiosk, you should contact airline staff at the ticket counter or boarding gate.
“In general, airlines prioritize helping families who ask to be seated together.”
If it can’t be resolved before boarding, he advised informing the flight attendants immediately so they can ask other passengers to switch.
He said this worked for him when he wasn’t seated next to his kids on a recent flight, which was sorted for “15 minutes of wobble” when he brought it up with the flight crew.
However, this does not always work.
Earlier this month, a passenger refused to swap seats to allow a family of four to sit next to each other.
Another woman explained why she refused to give up her seat to a stranger who wanted to sit next to her husband during a flight.
