I’m a flight attendant & these are the 4 most annoying things passengers do – how many are you guilty of?

As a flight attendant, looking after the passengers on board our flights is our top priority. But sometimes you make it really difficult for us.

Whether it’s thoughtlessness or drunkenness, there are many annoying things people do on airplanes that we then have to sort out, making our job a lot harder than it needs to be.

I’ve worked as a flight attendant for a top airline for the past ten years, and in a weekly blog for Sun Online Travel, I reveal little-known secrets about the job.

This week I’m going to talk about some of the things that excite us the most – so you know that if you’re flying, you should never do it.

toilet doors

It might sound like a small thing, but I’ve lost count of the number of times people have asked me to open the bathroom door for them.

Just read the sign on the door a little and see what it tells you and follow the instructions, it’s pretty easy stuff.

And if you can’t see a sign, you’ll either have to push or pull it, so try both.

So often passengers just stood by the toilet door and looked at me as if there was a password.

There isn’t – it’s a door. I’m sure you’ve used one before and it’s no different because it’s on an airplane.

Order your meals in advance

If you have any intolerances or dietary requirements, you must order your meal choices in advance.

I’m totally pro-vegan and if you want to be gluten free that’s fine. However, we cannot cater to every special dietary request at the last minute.

If you tell me you don’t eat meat or dairy while I’m offering you a chicken dinner or macaroni cheese, it’s a little late.

It also means I have to check everything else on the plane to see if you can eat it, and then that’s a little more of an issue than it needs to be. Until then, there’s only so much we can do.

I would also say if you have an awkward food preference just make sure you cater for yourself too. Because we don’t really have the ability to serve you a special meal when we’re high in the air.

Before you fly, find out about the airline you are flying with and see what they offer.

If they offer it brilliantly, go ahead and do it. But if they don’t offer it, you don’t want to find out when you sit down for a 12-hour flight. Pack some snacks and be prepared.

Understand our role

A lot of people treat us like we’re either waiters or bar staff.

We offer food and drink service on board, but we are not a bar or restaurant.

If we have it, I’ll give it to you, that’s my mantra, but if you ask me for seven gin and tonics at a time for you and your friends, it’s a bit much when we’re not driving the drinks cart around.

If you ask me about cocktails don’t expect me to suddenly be a mixologist – we are ultimately there for your safety and to look out for you, we won’t all know how to knock on a perfect Tom Collins. We probably don’t have all the ingredients either.

Your children are your responsibility

Aside from not being trained bar staff, we are not there to babysit your children either.

If you’re a single parent or just flying alone with your kids, we’re happy to take care of them while you go to the bathroom for a minute or two.

But more than once I’ve been asked to hold babies for long flights, especially after the parents have had a few drinks.

Giving down a child, infant or loved one to us and then simply expecting us to take care of them while we have our own responsibilities to attend to is not possible.

We don’t really take that into account when we go to work. We don’t take care of individual children, we take care of all passengers.

So if you need someone to take care of you, finding someone is your job, not ours.

Flight attendants could also have been annoyed by this passenger who painted her toenails during a flight.

Meanwhile, this flight attendant divided opinion by asking someone a very personal question.
