Harvard law professor emeritus Laurence Tribe said Tuesday on MSNBC’s The Last Word that it will be impossible for Attorney General Merrick Garland not to indict former President Donald Trump.
Tribe said, “All of this means that, putting aside the Georgia charges, and putting aside the charges of attempting to overturn the election and fomenting a violent riot, it’s impossible not to charge Donald Trump with breaking the law.” Espionage Law.”
He continued: “For violating them for knowingly withholding top secret and government information, voluntarily after being advised by his attorneys that those documents must be returned to the government, and for doing so in an unsecured location has done. This is a very serious crime, not just a technical crime. It’s not just about an argument about keeping things in one locker instead of another. this is espionage and endangers the security of the United States. So Merrick Garland has no choice. It used to look like a difficult decision form, now it’s a pretty easy one. It will be hard for the nation to swallow, but even harder for all of us in the long run would be to swallow the specter of someone violating United States national security laws and getting away with it. That just can’t be the law and I think what we have seen today in a serious courtroom, presided over by a judge who knows what he is doing, what we have seen is a glimpse of what is to come. And that means Donald Trump is finally being held accountable for the first time in his life. I think the United States will be better for it.”
