In Blender, RX 7900 XTX does 3.5GHz

The computer technicians at the German site performed the detailed frequency analysis for the Radeon RX 7900 XTX. By using a Sapphire Nitro+ graphics card, they achieved overclocking performance at frequencies well above 3GHz, but in other gaming-intensive environments.

In the Blender test, the Navi 31 GHz clocks are around 500 MHz above the average gaming clocks. Even the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX benchmark version showed more frequency than 3 GHz, and the overclocked Sapphire Nitro+ remained operational up to 3.5 GHz. The graphics card passed the Blender test at a frequency of 3455 MHz and then repeated several runs at a frequency of 3482. A drop in stability can already be observed at 348 MHz. At the same time, the Sapphire Radeon RX 7900 XTX consumes 374 watts at a frequency of 3455 MHz without reaching the power limit of 500 watts. This means that the cooling did not become a potential limiter in this experiment. Compared to the reference graphics card, there is a 13% frequency gain compared to a 21% higher power consumption compared to the reference graphics card.

It is widely reported that early statements about the RDNA 3 architecture GPU’s ability to operate at 3GHz at most are usually true, but the compute chip is incomplete and expected to be loaded in the application. In games, the graphics card consumes more when falling asleep. Sapphire Nitro+ in games could work at speeds close to 2832MHz, but in some test scenes there was a chance to get high.

Compare yours to AMD RDNA 2. On the Blender test, the XFX Radeon RX 6900 XT XTXH graphics card has a bandwidth of 2784MHz. That’s only 192MHz faster than an hour video game test. The power limit in Blender is still 278 watts.
