IND vs AUS 2022: “Such questions will arise and need to be asked”

Former Indian international Saba Karim has questioned why Jasprit Bumrah was called up in India’s squad for the T20I series against Australia despite not being fully fit.

Karim was one of many surprised when Rohit Sharma said at the draw in Mohali on Tuesday (20 September) that Bumrah wasn’t quite fit for the first T20I.

The former wicket-keeper questioned the lack of transparency about the pacemaker’s fitness and felt he shouldn’t have been in the squad if he hadn’t been fit. As a former selector, he knows that a player only makes the squad if the medical team thinks he is fit.

Speaking to India News Sports, Karim also gave his opinion on whether Jasprit Bumrah’s return will solve all problems in Team India’s bowling attack. He said:

“If Bumrah was fit, why didn’t you play him? If he had a problem, how was he in the squad? Such questions will arise and must be asked.”

Karim continued:

“We also need to see if Bumrah is in that groove because he only played a T20I in England after the IPL [Indian Premier League]. Of course, if he doesn’t get enough support from the other side, his addition won’t make much of a difference to the team.”

“Jasprit Bumrah is fully fit and will play tomorrow’s game.” – Suryakumar Yadav

Saba Karim was also stunned by the hosts’ decision to play Umesh Yadav ahead of Deepak Chahar, who was called up to the reserves for the 2022 T20 World Cup. He added:

“Why did Umesh Yadav play when you had Deepak Chahar, who is on reserve for the World Cup? When you have 15 players selected, you have to rotate among yourself and cannot play against anyone from the outside.”

Deepak Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah need game time: Rajkumar Sharma

Rajkumar Sharma, ex-Delhi cricketer and childhood coach of Virat Kohli, was also present on the same podium. He agreed with Karim’s opinion that Team India must give Deepak Chahar and Jasprit Bumrah playing time as both are returning from injuries.

To this end he stated:

“Deepak Chahar and Bumrah need game time. Our bowling looks really weak and we need to try different combinations to see what works best for the team.”

Rajkumar continued:

“When there are injuries at the World Cup you need players who are ready to come into the XI and perform. Deepak travels as a reserve with the squad so it’s important that he plays.”

It will be interesting to see whether the duo will make it into the Indian team against the Australians on Friday (September 23) in Nagpur.

Will Team India bring both Deepak Chahar and Jasprit Bumrah to the second T20I in Nagpur? Let us know in the comments. IND vs AUS 2022: “Such questions will arise and need to be asked”
