IND vs AUS 2022: “That was a good experience in IPL to draw on to the other night”

Australia’s recent debutant Tim David has credited the Indian Premier League (IPL) with helping him remain calm under pressure in the first T20I against India in Mohali on Tuesday September 20.

David’s much-anticipated debut for Australia came in the first T20I of the three-game series against India. Despite hitting a modest 14 balls and 18, the 26-year-old was involved in a winning 62-run stand with Matthew Wade (45* from 21) to help Australia chase 209 from four balls down.

In a virtual press conference, David praised the performances of the Australian batters to face the steep chase while explaining how useful the experience of playing in the IPL has been for him.

He was quoted by The Indian Express as saying:

“Having had some good experiences playing in India, I think I can finish games and understand how it can go and how the pitches can play or when it lights up in front of you, so you know there’s an advantage to finish second Indian conditions.

“That was a good experience in the IPL to draw on from the other night out there in the middle.

Although David failed to impress in the 2021 IPL for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), he did a great job for Mumbai Indians (MI) earlier this year. The all-rounder scored 186 runs in eight matches with a strike rate of 216.28 and an average of 37.20.

Reflecting on his role for Australia, David explained that hitting the big shots was his job as he could bat in the middle order. He added:

“I think my role on the team here is to bat in the middle order. That means I won’t face a lot of balls in games. And I’ll probably try to put my foot down with my punch first or if we’re chasing, try to finish the game.

“So I have to tick my boxes to try to play powerful shots, try to push the limit and I think that’s a big part of my training. It’s very similar to what I’ve been playing T20 cricket for the last year and 18 months so I’m trying to bring my experience to the table and just approach the game and help the team win games.”

Australia hopes to seal the series in the second T20I at Nagpur on Friday 23 September. IND vs AUS 2022: “That was a good experience in IPL to draw on to the other night”
