IND vs ENG 2022: Wasim Jaffer on Virat Kohli skipping West Indies tour

Wasim Jaffer is unsure how a break from the West Indies tour would help out-of-form hitter Virat Kohli. According to Jaffer, staying in touch with the game could have been more beneficial for the former Indian skipper.

Kohli was not part of the India squad previously announced for the three-game West Indies ODI series. On Thursday, his name did not appear on the T20I team announced for the five-game series in the Caribbean.

The 33-year-old’s poor run with the willow continued when he was sacked for 16 in the second ODI against England at Lord’s. Jaffer admitted the pressure is constantly mounting on the former captain, telling ESPNcricinfo:

“Every inning will put pressure on him and probably challenge him as well. People keep reminding him. I’m sure it suits him. If he had played this T20 he would have reported. I don’t know if this break will help him. The next innings will be very crucial for him.”

Rohit was asked again about Virat. And I’m glad he said what he had. Good to see the captain supporting his top man.

Former England left arm spinner Ashley Giles shared a contrasting view. Given the tight schedule and Kohli’s form, Giles believes Indian management made the right decision. He mean:

“He’s clearly struggling at the moment. He’s taking a break from this West Indies series and I think it’s the right thing. The schedules are pretty crazy for most teams in the world right now especially India, England. It’s good administration. Rahul Dravid is a bright person and you have to take care of your best players.”

Kohli has scored points of 11, 20, 1, 11 and 16 in the three formats during the current England tour.

“I have to accept that the IPL is part of the calendar” – Giles on Kohli not rested for the T20 league

While discussing Kohli’s rest, Giles admitted questions were being asked about why the cricketer failed to take a break during the 2022 IPL.

When asked, the former cricketer replied that it was time to accept the reality of the situation. Giles explained:

“The argument about the IPL will come, but we have to accept that the IPL is part of the calendar and you’re never sure when any of these players need a break. Right now it’s Kohli who needs a break and you want him firing, fresh and ready for when that World Cup comes around. I think it’s the right step. Get him out of there and rest.”

Kohli also had a poor IPL 2022 campaign, scoring 341 runs in 16 games with a 22.73 average. He registered three golden ducks during the issue.
