Former wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel thinks Nicholas Pooran Ravichandran Ashwin should have played more conservatively. The West Indies white-ball captain was sacked by the off-spinner in the second T20I in St.Kitts yesterday (1st August).
Pooran went out at bat with the score of 48-1 to pursue a goal of 139 set by the visitors. The wicket-keeper’s batsman found his rhythm immediately after sending Avesh Khan for back-to-back borders. However, he used the same approach against R. Ashwin, who floated one up at good length.
Pooran made a mighty punch after coming down the track but only found altitude with his connection. Suryakumar Yadav safely wrapped up the catch at Long-On to give India their second wicket. With four fifties in his last five games before the current series, he has yet to capitalize on his good form.
The West Indian skipper, who expressed surprise at the fashion, died in the second T20I, Patel said on Criccbuzz:
“Really surprised by the shot Pooran played. Every time a hitter comes in with his left arm, Ashwin can be seen bowling and throwing really well at them. So you have to get smarter, pick your bowlers while chasing a total like that, and Ashwin isn’t the easiest bowler to do that against.”
Patel opined that Pooran should have just played Ashwin, adding:
“Here he could have just taken singles against the off-spinner and faced the left-arm spinner instead, so that was probably an irresponsible shot from him.”
It should be noted that the experienced off-spinner also claimed the opposing skipper’s wicket in the opening game of the series.
The left-handed hitter, who was sacked for just 14 of 11 deliveries in the second game, needs to be careful with aggression, especially when pursuing tricky targets. The Skipper’s wicket kept India’s hopes alive in the game, only to be dashed by Brandon King and Devon Thomas’ exploits with the racquet.
“Myself, Hetmyer can take more responsibility” – Nicholas Pooran
After a jittery five-wicket win in the delayed contest, the West Indies skipper admitted the batsmen should play more responsibly. Top scorer Brandon King was without support as he hit a match-winning 68. However, the rest of the striking unit fell after taking time to settle at the crease.
Speaking of the batsmen’s performance in the second T20I, the captain said:
“A win is a win. I believe in T20, better batsmen have to hit long. Myself, Hetmyer, can take more responsibility. King should have won the game for us with the way he hit. But hopefully he will he’s learning from that. Thomas came back for us from injury and showed trumps on his home pitch.”
West Indies will take on India today (2 August) in the third T20I of the series at the same venue. The series is 1-1 with three more games to play.
