Police have confirmed a 24-year-old Irish man was injured in a shooting on the Costa del Sol.
Organized crime officers are investigating the incident, which took place just before 6pm on Tuesday afternoon near a luxury golf course in Marbella.
The victim was shot in the side and is said to have reached the hospital himself or with the help of another person instead of calling the emergency services and waiting for paramedics to arrive.
The incident occurred in an area known as Turtle Lake above the Aloha Golf Course.
The small and picturesque lake, tucked away in the northern part of the upscale residential area of Nueva Andalucia, just a short drive from Marbella city center and glittering Puerto Banus, is a popular day out for local schools.
The latest shooting comes eight days after the arrest of suspected key member of the Kinahan cartel Johnny Morrissey, a British-born Irish passport holder who used to work as a bouncer in Rochdale, at a flat in nearby Mijas, half an hour’s drive from Malaga.
In another incident in July, a man was stabbed and four people shot dead at the Opium Beach Club in Marbella.
A 40-year-old Dutchman was arrested in the early hours of July 18 after the drama.
One of the most seriously injured victims was a 32-year-old Irishman, who was arrested after being treated in hospital on suspicion of being involved in an altercation shortly before the shooting in a VIP area of the stage where South African DJ Black Coffee was playing to have been to a tightly packed crowd.
Spain’s National Police confirmed the age and nationality of the victim of the latest shooting early Wednesday morning, hours after detectives only said it was a foreigner who had been shot in the side.
A spokesman for the National Police said: “The investigation is ongoing and we have yet to make arrests.
“The shooting victim received a bullet to his side, with the bullet entering and exiting his body.
“The incident occurred at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday.”
Sources said that while he remained at the Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella, his injuries were serious but not life-threatening.
Police rushed to the scene after being alerted by a call from a local who said he heard multiple gunshots.
They found no signs of injuries when they reached the area, and it was later revealed that the shooting victim had taken himself to the hospital.
The investigation is being led by the National Police’s Uydco-Costa del Sol unit, which specializes in fighting drugs and organized crime.
