This article discusses whether Netflix’s Notre-Dame is based on a true story – it may inadvertently contain spoilers for the show.
The new miniseries from Netflix Notre-Dame based on the book La Nuit de Notre Damewritten by the Paris fire brigade and Romain Gubert and details of real-world efforts to put out a fire that engulfed Paris’ iconic medieval Catholic cathedral in 2019. Is fact and fiction mixed up here? How much of what we see on screen is true? Well, let’s try to find out.
Is Notre Dame on Netflix based on a true story?
Let’s get the obvious out of the way: Yes, Netflix Notre-Dame based on the real fire that broke out on April 15, 2019 in the gothic Paris Cathedral, a fire believed to have been caused by an electrical short circuit during renovation work. Due to the building’s age and cultural and religious significance, it made international headlines; Centuries of history were destined to crumble to ashes or, at best, go out with the fire.
In the end, the fires were put out and no one died, which could be considered the best-case scenario, but the show itself adds to the importance of what was lost in the fire. Somehow, despite the damage, the building stayed standing despite being dilapidated for a while, and by 2024 the building’s restoration will be complete thanks to millions of dollars in donations raised after the fire. Somehow, Notre Dame survives.
Based on non-fiction, the series is obviously accurate in its portrayal of these events, at least in the broadest sense. There is no new cause of the fire or a different outcome. However, it follows a similar approach to that of floodon too Netflixwhich depicted the famous Wroclaw flood in Poland, but told the true story using fictional characters based on real people.
In here Notre-Dame, once again, real-life characters inform fictional creations, and once again, these fictional creations have pre-packaged backstories and relationships that are much more made for television than their real-life counterparts. For some this will be deplorable, however Notre-Damelike the feature film Notre Dame on fire directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud, also released that year, is not a documentary. A certain artistic freedom is always to be expected.
You can stream Notre-Dame exclusively on Netflix.
