Islam Makhachev responds to those who believe he hasn’t fought enough high-level competition

During his journey to the top of the lightweight division, Islam Makhachev has been criticized for not fighting off as much elite talent as he could have had. However, the 155lb contender has now cleared the air as to why that appears to be the case.

On October 22, the 31-year-old will face his toughest test since he dedicated his life to the sport 12 years ago in Abu Dhabi. Earning an opportunity to fight for UFC gold, the Dagestani meet Charles Oliveira as the two battle for the vacant lightweight belt.

During a recent interview shake MMAIslam Makhachev addressed complaints that he had not faced enough high-level competition, claiming that he was not responsible for the level of his opponents he was facing.

“Throughout my professional career I’ve had one problem. All these guys at the top have been avoiding me for many years. But that’s not my fault, I only fight whoever they put in front of me, I never pick some opponents and now will this problem end because now i will be champion and they will call me [champion]… Throughout my professional career I have had this problem. I call [for a fight against] Chandler, I’m calling Poirier, I’m calling Gaethje, all these guys, but they don’t answer me.”

Recently, Michael Chandler and Makhachev have engaged in an online feud, with both fighters not believing they deserve the praise they are receiving for the level of fighters they have beaten in the octagon.

Would beating Charles Oliveira Islam Makhachev earn the respect he deserves?

While he is of course one of the best lightweights in the world, Islam Makhachev has big boots to fill as most fans expect him to follow in Khabib Nurmagomedov’s footsteps and dominate the 155lb division.

Before he can take over the weight class, the sambo specialist must first overcome the ever-dangerous Charles Oliveira, who poses a menace everywhere.

If he manages to end Oliveira’s 11-fight winning streak, it won’t be long before doubters jump on the Islam Makhachev bandwagon and pay him their long-overdue respects.
