“It doesn’t matter on paper who’s the best team, it’s the team that gets hot at the right time”

The sixth-ranked Philadelphia Phillies stunned the Atlanta Braves with 101 wins and reached the National League Championship Series for the first time since 2010.

The result, while a big surprise, doesn’t necessarily come as a shock to the Atlanta Braves. The defending champions were in a similar spot last year but were on the receiving end as they upset the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2021 NLCS en route to the World Series.

The postseason is all about teams producing top performances at the right time, not necessarily teams that have been at the top all season.

Ask the Dodgers, who lost three straight games to the San Diego Padres after last night’s NLDS showdown. The Dodgers won 111 games in the regular season while the Padres barely made the playoffs, finishing a staggering 22 games behind Los Angeles.

Atlanta Braves third baseman Austin Riley has confirmed the same thing. After last night’s 8-3 embarrassment he said:

Austin Riley discusses NLDS results ⤵️”I hate that part. All I can say is that I will work harder than ever this off-season because this group is special. She really is.”

“I said it last year when we did our run. On paper it doesn’t matter who the best team is, it’s the team that heats up at the right time. You’re hot right now.” – Austin Riley (0:24 – 0:35)

The Phillies will face the Padres in an all-wildcard NLCS matchup that begins Tuesday at Petco Park.

The Atlanta Braves can’t defend the World Series crown as MLB waits for a repeat champion

The Phillies won 87 games to secure last postseason spot. The Braves, on the other hand, won 101 games. There seems to be only one winner on paper, but postseason games are never played on paper.

The Braves’ exit is the fifth-biggest upset regular-season win in postseason history.

Reflecting on the heavy loss, Atlanta Braves manager Brian Snitker said:

“Like I told them, the goal when we come out of spring training is to win the division. Until you win the division you don’t get a chance to do anything special because you never know what’s going to happen, you don’t know which team is going to be hot, what things need to go right so you can deep dive into the postseason. And we got in. That didn’t happen to us this year.”

Brandon Marsh hit a three-run homer and JT Realmuto smashed an inside-the-park home run that sent the Phillies to the NLCS.

The Braves’ loss meant MLB had not had a repeat champion since the New York Yankees’ famous three-peat (1998-2000).
