Manager Christophe Galtier has examined the contract situation of striker Lionel Messi at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
The Argentine icon is in the final six months of his contract at the Parc des Princes. The 35-year-old has shown he has plenty left in the tank after an impressive start to the season with Les Parisiens, crowned by a 2022 FIFA World Cup.
He also won the Qatar Golden Ball after scoring seven goals and providing three assists in the tournament. For his club this season, Lionel Messi has recorded 12 goals and 14 assists in 19 games in all competitions.
The numbers suggest he has a few years left in his tank. However, it is still unclear which club he will play for at the beginning of next season.
Speaking at his press conference ahead of PSG’s Ligue 1 game against Angers on January 11, the French tactician (h/t RMCSport) said:
“There are talks, the sporting directors have exchanged views with Leo about an extension. I don’t know where it is. Leo seems happy to me in Paris. After that, you have to see his position in relation to the club project. It’s an issue , which I will not discuss with him.
A sentimental return to Barcelona, where he spent 21 years of his career, will always be possible. However, PSG are reportedly doing everything they can to extend Messi’s stay in Paris.
They even reportedly decided to sell Neymar Jr. so they could afford the Argentine’s contract extension. However, Galtier has admitted he doesn’t discuss the issue with Lionel Messi.
Lionel Messi is expected to play against Angers for PSG
The home game against Angers at the Parc des Princes is expected to be Lionel Messi’s first game in PSG colors as world champions.
He arrived at Camp des Loges on January 4 but was dropped from the squad for his team that beat LB Chateauroux 3-1 in the Coupe de la Ligue on January 7. Against Angers, however, he faces a return to club football.
The above source has confirmed that Lionel Messi was present in training alongside Renato Sanches, Neymar and Marco Verratti on Tuesday 10 January. The French are four points ahead of second-placed RC Lens after 17 games.
Messi was absent when Galtier’s men lost 3-1 to Lens earlier this month, ending PSG’s hopes of a 10-point gap at the top of the table.
