Though the Golden State Warriors won on opening night and celebrated their title, analyst Shannon Sharpe says drama still lurks beneath the shiny surface.
The Warriors opened Tuesday night with a 123-109 win over the LA Lakers. Despite this, Sharpe believes that the situation in the warrior camp has not entirely calmed down.
Although the tension was palpable in the air, the Warriors successfully made the ceremony the highlight of the evening. Banner #7 was hoisted on the rafters prior to tipoff.
When asked what he thought of the team’s chemistry in Undisputed: Skip and Shannon, Sharpe said:
“It just gets uncomfortable. They are teammates. They understand they have a job to do. These two guys (Jordan Poole and Draymond Green) have spoken about being professional and doing the job to the best of their ability.
“I didn’t listen to the audio, but Draymond didn’t even seem like Draymond last night. I think that’s one of the reasons they didn’t suspend him, because it would have been even more awkward that Draymond wasn’t there for the ring ceremony.”
Despite all the uncertainties, the Warriors recorded their first win. Jordan Poole and Draymond Green did their jobs, and Green set screens for Poole and JP, who retaliated with an assist.
The Warriors won despite recording an average shooting night by their standards. Though Poole was sensational, the veterans (Steph Curry and Klay Thompson) led the charge.
Curry finished the game with a game-high 33 points while Thompson recorded 18. Andrew Wiggins proved himself again, finishing the game with 20 points and six rebounds.
Draymond Green beat Jordan Poole weeks before the start of the season
With just under two weeks to go before the new season begins, Green punched Poole in the face in practice. Although several former NBA players and pundits said it was a normal occurrence, video of the altercation was not pleasant to watch.
The reason for their altercation remains unknown. However, it has been speculated that Poole was becoming arrogant and Green had not. Coach Steve Kerr and his teammates have debunked such rumors. However, no member of the organization has spoken about the reason for the struggle.
Draymond publicly apologizes for hitting Jordan Poole
Since the incident, Green has apologized on several occasions for his role in the altercation. The four-time NBA champion said he was in a bad place and took his frustration out on JP.
Green took some personal time off from the team to give everyone a chance to heal. Though questions have been raised about the team’s future development, Green believes they are both professionals and would do their jobs.
Curry acted as a leader and tried to resolve the situation. The eternal 3-point leader has played mediator, trying to ensure that both parties settle their differences.
Many expected Green to be suspended, especially after the video was leaked. However, the Warriors, in consultation with Poole, believed a suspension was not warranted.
The organization said Green was fined, but the amount was not disclosed. It was also emphasized that missing the ring presentation would have been too severe a penalty for Green.
With one in the win column, the Warriors have gotten off to a great start on their title defense journey. They face the Denver Nuggets next Friday.
