Rafael Nadal will start his Wimbledon campaign when he meets Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo in the first round on Tuesday. Nadal, who won the Australian Open and French Open this year, is aiming for a third Grand Slam title.
Despite knowing his first round match against the 22-time Grand Slam champion was going to be incredibly tough, Cerundolo claimed it was a match he’d been waiting his whole life for.
“It’s the game I’ve wanted to play my whole life. “I know it’s a very nice challenge because I’m up against one of the best in history or the best,” Cerondulo said.
The Spaniard’s opening round opponent, who is making his Wimbledon debut, told ole.com.ar it was a very nice challenge as he faced one of the best in history.
The Argentine added that he always wanted to play against the ‘Big-3’ before they hung up their racquets and that the match against Nadal would be a ‘special duel’.
“It’s a very special duel. On the one hand, when I saw the draw, I was happy because I wanted to play against him, against Federer and against Djokovic before they retire because I know they don’t have many years left .” “
“You always go out on the court to win. To get high in tennis you have to have confidence against everyone. In these games you go for victory but deep down you know it’s Nadal, that he has the chance , to win and I have a chance to lose,” he added.
“I have all three (Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer) as idols” – Francisco Cerundolo
Facing Nadal, Francisco Cerundolo figured he would try to savor the moment as too much focus on his opponent and the surroundings would make him tense.
“The most important thing is to enjoy it. Because it’s a game that doesn’t touch you often. Then I have to do my best. I have to concentrate on playing my tennis and not think about it too much because when you start , thinking too much about your rival, about the environment, you might not be able to play, They get tense and have a really bad time. Enjoy and go out and play as best you can, you have to do that,” Cerondulo said.
The world No. 42 explained that players from Argentina always follow the Spaniards closely but added that alongside the 36-year-old, Djokovic and Federer are also his idols as they are all great players.
“As Argentines, we often look at the Spaniards because they play similarly to us, they prefer to play on clay. I have all three (Djokovic, Nadal and Federer) as role models. Everyone has their stuff that they’re better at than the other, but they’re all great,” he added.
