Jadon Sancho returns to Manchester United training after a break due to physical and mental issues

Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho is back in training after a lengthy layoff due to physical and mental health issues.

Sancho last played for the Red Devils on October 22 in a 1-1 draw against Chelsea in the Premier League. He missed games against Aston Villa, Fulham and Real Sociedad due to injury problems.

The former Borussia Dortmund player has also been left out of England’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup by Gareth Southgate.

While United’s season continued after the break at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Sancho remained absent. He trained with Dutch coaches in the Netherlands under the tutelage of Erik ten Hag.

The Manchester United manager told the media last month he wasn’t sure about a possible return date for Sancho. Ten Hag said (via The Guardian):

“I’ve had several conversations with Jadon. He’s on a physical program and our goal is to get him back as soon as possible, but I can’t predict when that will be.”

Since his big-money move (£73m) from Borussia Dortmund last summer, Sancho has failed to gain a foothold for the Red Devils. He has scored eight goals and provided four assists in 52 games for United.

Sancho has made 14 appearances for the team this season, scoring three goals and providing one assist.

Speaking about the youngster’s influence on the team, Ten Hag said last month:

“When the league started he played some good games but after we had a level drop sometimes you don’t know why or what’s causing it. Most of the time it comes slowly. Watch first, but the stats back it up.”

Danny Murphy is urging Jadon Sancho to follow in the footsteps of Manchester United youngster Alejandro Garnacho

Alejandro Garncacho made a spectacular cameo appearance in Manchester United’s 2-1 derby win over Manchester City on January 15. Former England midfielder Danny Murphy has now asked £73million Sancho to follow suit.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Murphy said:

“The performance of Alejandro Garnacho [in the 2-1 win over Manchester City ] on such a big stage… [he] was a revelation when he came on.”

Murphy added:

“Not many 18-year-olds have been able to handle this occasion with a combination of maturity and fearlessness. If I were Jadon Sancho I would look to him and United’s achievements as a motivator.”

However, Murphy believes Ten Hag will still give Sancho a chance to turn things around, as he said:

“I wouldn’t write to him – [Sancho] With Ten Hag appearing to be the type of manager to give him a chance, it seems Sancho’s problems are more physical than skill-based. With the right attitude, he can be ready to help the team.”

Manchester United meet Crystal Palace in the Premier League on January 18.
