Jamie Carragher predicts who will win the Premier League title between Liverpool and Manchester City

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher claimed his former side could beat Manchester City in the Premier League title race this season. However, he believes it will mostly depend on defender Virgil van Dijk’s fitness.

Van Dijk suffered a knee injury in the 2020-21 season and was out for the season. The Reds also suffered several injuries to other players this season as they finished third in the table, 17 points adrift of champions Manchester City.

The 31-year-old returned last season but wasn’t able to play at his highest level until around Christmas. Jürgen Klopp’s team improved massively after that and lost by just one point to the Cityzens in the Premier League title race.

Carragher believes the Merseysiders will clinch the title this season if Van Dijk stays at his best. When asked about his predictions for the title race, he told Sky Sports:

“Liverpool because of Virgil van Dijk. Every time he’s been fit and at his best Liverpool have scored mid-90 points. He came back from that cruciate ligament injury last season. From Christmas when he was back at his best Liverpool looked good Completely different team. If Liverpool can get him at their best from the start, they have a great chance.”

Reminder that Virgil van Dijk has been at Liverpool for almost 5 years and has never lost a Premier League game at Anfield… 🤯

The Reds begin their campaign against newly promoted Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday 6 August. Meanwhile, Manchester City begin their title defense against West Ham United on August 7 at the London Stadium.

Liverpool and Manchester City’s summer transfer business so far

Both clubs have strengthened their squads, but some of their most prominent players have also left the club this summer.

Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko left the Cityzens this summer, with the former joining Chelsea and the latter two joining Arsenal. Fernandinho has also left the club and joined Brazilian club Athletico Paranaese.

In terms of arrivals, Manchester City have signed Erling Haaland, Julian Alvarez and Kalvin Phillips from Borussia Dortmund, River Plate and Leeds United respectively.

Haaland joined Pep Guardiola for £51m. He scored 86 goals and provided 23 assists in just 89 games for Borussia Dortmund across all competitions.

Meanwhile, Jürgen Klopp’s team has also seen some big arrivals and departures this summer.

Sadio Mane left the club after six years to join Bayern Munich. Takumi Minamino, Neco Williams and Ben Davies have also left for AS Monaco, Nottingham Forest and Rangers.

The Reds spent a club-record £85m (including add-ons) to sign Darwin Nunez from Benfica. Last season he scored 34 goals and provided four assists in 41 games.
