England fast bowler Jamie Overton is unlikely to bowl for long after reportedly suffering from a lumbar stress fracture. He reported back pain towards the end of the English summer while making his debut against New Zealand, representing Surrey in the County Championship.
Overton hit a memorable 97 in his first innings with the bat and won two wickets as England clinched a seven-wicket win to end the streak with a 3-0 lead as winners.
His last appearance came on November 23 last year with the England Lions against England national team in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) before the Ben Stokes-led side left for the Tour of Pakistan.
He was in the Middle East, ready to represent the Gulf Giants in the ongoing inaugural edition of the International League T20 (ILT20). However, he has returned home following the diagnosis and is currently consulting with specialists on the nature of the injury and the course of recovery. The UAE-based franchise has already named West Indian all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite as a substitute.
The nature of the injury will likely keep him from bowling for about six months. Because of his batting experience, after a certain period of his rehabilitation process, he could appear as a pure batsman in the shortest format.
However, the injury almost dashed his hopes of making it to the Ashes 2023, which begins on June 16. England are unlikely to pick him unless he can perform fully as an all-rounder.
Stress fractures are becoming a common sight among England bowlers, with Jamie Overton the latest victim
Since the beginning of last year, several English players have been sidelined with stress fractures in their backs. Olly Stone, Jofra Archer, Saqib Mahmood and Matt Fisher all fell out with the same injury sometime in 2022.
England started the tour of Pakistan at a reduced pace, even taking into account the conditions on the subcontinent. James Anderson and Ollie Robinson bowled the majority of the overs, with skipper Ben Stokes serving as the third seaman. Stuart Broad was unavailable on paternity leave.
Even if Jamie Overton finds a way to recover in time, he will find it difficult to break into the squad with pacesetters’ injury woes all but resolved.
Jofra Archer and Olly Stone are currently playing in the SA20 League while Broad will be back from his holiday. That leaves England spoiled for choice for the Ashes in six months.
