Janet Street-Porter attacked by Loose Women fans for ‘fat shaming’

Janet Street-Porter has come under fire for her comments on Loose Women this week.
Presenter Janet joined co-presenters Christine Lampard, Denise Welsh and Coleen Nolan to discuss whether cigarette-style junk food labels should be put up to help solve the obesity problem in the UK.
Janet revealed that the images and messages on cigarette packs have helped reduce the number of smokers in the UK and also saw it as a good idea for junk food.
Her colleague Coleen disagreed with Janet, saying the labels don’t discourage people from buying junk food.
Christine also said she wasn’t sure about the cigarette-style labeling when she thought about shopping with her little girl.

Janet lets loose women
Continuing the junk food conversation, Janet said something needed to be done about the obesity problem in the UK.
She made an imaginary comparison between the heights of people captured in a photograph sunbathing in the early 2000s to the heights of people on the beach during yesterday’s heatwave. She said Britain’s waistline has definitely increased.
Janet said: “A lot of young women now think that being taller is acceptable and they glorify something that could shorten their lives.
“We have normalized obesity. We made it fashionable for some people.”

How did ITV viewers react?
Here, plenty of ITV viewers took to Twitter, with many posting angry tweets claiming Janet was “fat ashamed”.
One user said: “Hey Loose Women. Do you remember when you did this campaign? Didn’t take long, back to today’s body shaming.”
Another tweeted: “Isn’t it weird that when she was fat shaming people Jamelia lost her job. I wonder what the difference is between her, Janet Street-Porter and Denise Welch?”

Additionally, another user shared her personal story on Twitter: “I’ve been waiting for medical and psychological help for my overweight for over five years. I’ve tried everything. Trust me, saying “fashionable” or “fat-shaming” gets nowhere. We are human too! Diet problems are addictions. Just like drugs and alcohol. How dare you!”
Another said: “It wasn’t long ago that Loose Women said that any type of body is acceptable and that you should be body conscious. Today is a different story. Which is it?”
However, some Twitter users agreed with Janet’s comments.
One user said: “Right on Janet. Obesity is now considered normal. Very dangerous. And some younger celebs don’t help butt implants look bigger.”
Another said: “Loose Women is so much better when Janet Street-Porter is around. It’s always interesting and controversial.”
