All lessons can be viewed via YouTube channels for Loughborough College and the Telegraph. Earlier lessons include a focus on athletics on day one, gymnastics on day two, fitness on day three, multi-skills on day four, and an Olympic final on day five.
The topic of the latest physical education offering is gymnastics with a particular focus on balance. All activities can be done in your own home with just a few everyday items.
After a five-minute warm-up, Loughborough College teachers and a student go through ten balance exercises that incorporate aspects of yoga and varying levels of difficulty for different abilities. The 30 minute session is then followed by a 30 minute challenge to learn how to perform a headstand in 3 easy steps with a demonstration.
The videos, which go live before 9am each morning, remain available throughout the day to ensure students can combine their hour-long activity with the other classes already scheduled by their schools.
The collaboration with Loughborough College, a sporting hotbed for some of Britain’s stars including England footballers Steph Houghton and Ben Chilwell, is in partnership with the Telegraph’s Keep Kids Active campaign.
Loughborough set up its first classes in a lounge-style room to show how easy it is to do the exercises at home. The goal is to surpass the offering of the popular Joe Wicks YouTube tutorials due to the level of expertise in line with the curriculum.
Jo Maher, principal and chief executive at Loughborough College, says her staff can ensure children meet at least three out of four elements of the physical education curriculum. The fourth – competitive sport – is banned by England’s lockdown rules.
Loughborough College has committed to teaching in the first week and lined up Ashmole Academy in north London as the host for January 25. The baton will then be passed across the country to allow the lessons to be streamed for free.
