Josh Kelly takes on Gabriel Corzo in the Newcastle competition in June

Sunderland fighter Kelly, currently ranked number two in the world, will take on Corzo on June 24 at the Vertu Motors Arena.

A win over undefeated Corzo, currently ninth in the rankings, will boost the Northeast’s prospects of securing a shot at undisputed world super middleweight champion Jermell Charlo.

“A win over Corzo in Newcastle on June 24 will put me within reach of a shot at the world title,” said Kelly. “I am very excited to be working with DAZN and I am fully committed to creating an outstanding performance that will be seen on their platform around the world.

“Corzo is ranked ninth in the world and is a good fighter but I’m going to put in a performance that will make the rest of the division sit up and take notice. You should not miss this.”

Kelly, who was part of Team GB’s amateur squad at the 2016 Olympics, successfully turned his career around after a shock defeat to David Avanesyan.

Britain’s title win over fellow Northeastern Troy Williamson in December was a big step forward, but with undefeated Corzo set to face a dangerous opponent with world title ambitions of their own.

“Make no mistake, on June 24th in Newcastle, Josh Kelly’s world title dream ends and mine keeps getting closer,” Corzo said. “I don’t travel all the way from Argentina to get the numbers.

“I want my shot at the world title and Kelly is standing in my way so he has to be brushed aside. I hope Kelly’s fans are prepared for the surprise ahead.”

Next month’s show also features the return of heavyweight contender Nathan Gorman, a second pro contest for Codie Smith and a heavyweight showdown between Newcastle’s Steve Robinson and Franklin Ignatius. Josh Kelly takes on Gabriel Corzo in the Newcastle competition in June
