Former Indian batter Aakash Chopra believes the team that has put in the better batting performance will emerge victorious in the clash between the Joburg Super Kings (JSK) and the Paarl Royals (PR) on Friday 13 January. While JSK won their SA20 campaign with a, the David Miller-led Royals suffered a grueling opening-day defeat at the hands of MI Cape Town.
JSK and PR had memorable starts with the racquet in their respective encounters. While the Royals went 41-1 on the power play after losing their first wicket in the second over, the Super Kings were reduced to 27-4 after six overs against Durban’s Super Giants.
JSK, despite their dreadful start, was able to rally 190-6 after valuable shots from Donovan Ferreira, Faf du Plessis and Romario Shepherd.
Opining that both sides have a bankable batting unit, Chopra said on his YouTube channel:
“The first match of the Joburg Super Kings was very interesting. They just played a spinner in Phangiso, went to Ferreira and Hendricks to play more spin bowling. Faf’s captaincy in this match was a bit 50-50 for the first time. But she ended up winning the match.”
“There is no doubt about the striking unity of this team. So it’s going to be interesting to see JSK vs PR because it’s going to be hitting vs. hitting.”
The Paarl Royals are currently at the bottom of the table after the first round of play. They have a net run rate of -2.125 after MI Cape Town secured a win against them with a bonus point on January 10th.
“It’s important to make the home turf a fortress” – Aakash Chopra
As mentioned, the Royals suffered a heavy defeat in their first game, which took place in Cape Town.
After the first slip, they will play at their home, Boland Park, to get their first points on the board.
Noting the importance of maintaining dominance on home soil, Chopra said:
“Paarl Royals is a solid team, they have Buttler, Roy, Morgan and Miller, how could it be bad? They’ll have Lungi Ngidi for the next game, so the bowling that looked shaky in the first game might just be broken up.
This is their first home game and in these leagues it’s important to make the homestead a fortress. That’s how you begin to build loyalty, strength and dominance.”
The Paarl Royals host the Joburg Super Kings in the first of a series of double-header matches on Friday.
