Judge hands man convicted of handling stolen goods extra jail time for obscene outburst in court

A man found guilty of stealing household items has had his sentence extended over a rude outburst at the judge.

Artin Mongan was sentenced to a total of six and a half months in prison after being found for contempt of court.

The 35-year-old made obscene gestures at District Judge Ted Magill during the first hearing last Friday.

As Mr Magill dealt with his case, he said: “Hurry up, you b*****d.”

The case in Belfast Magistrates’ Court was dropped immediately after the outbreak.

But Mongan, who appeared remotely via video link for custody, then pointed a middle finger and another rude hand gesture at the judge.

He had been found guilty of three counts of receiving stolen goods.

The offenses were linked to burglaries into flats in the Stranmillis area in April last year.

A PlayStation games console and accessories, speakers, broadband router, groceries and clothing were stolen during the burglaries.

Prosecutors said the stolen items were found when the accused was stopped and later searched.

Mongan, from Ross Road in Belfast, has been ordered to appear back in court today to finalize the verdict.

Defense attorney Eoghan McKenna described his client’s conduct at the earlier hearing as improper.

The attorney explained that Mongan was awaiting a separate case in a different court when the remarks were made.

“He will obviously be taken into custody immediately today,” confirmed Mr. McKenna.

The judge sentenced Mongan to six months for receiving stolen goods, stating: “His conduct on Friday was absolutely unacceptable – I regard it as contempt (in court).

“I will impose (another) two weeks in a row.”
