“Just a professional relationship that was difficult to sustain” – Arteta makes honest admission about Bernd Leno’s Arsenal exit

Mikel Arteta has revealed the reasons behind Bernd Leno’s departure from Arsenal.

Sky Sports have reported that the goalkeeper, 30, has agreed an £8million deal with Fulham after a largely disappointing spell at the Emirates Stadium.

Leno joined north London from Bayer Leverkusen in 2018 and finished as the club’s top scorer for three seasons. However, last season was far more difficult for the Germany international as England keeper Aaron Ramsdale became the club’s undisputed number one.

hey @Arsenal Fans it’s time for me to move on. It was a pleasure to be part of this great football club for 4 amazing years. Thanks for your support. Also a big thank you to my teammates and the people behind the team. I look forward to seeing you soon! ♥️ 💪🏽😊

Ramsdale’s arrival resulted in Leno only making eight appearances throughout the season, with just four in the Premier League. When the club signed American goalkeeper Matt Turner in the summer, it looked like Leno would become the club’s third-choice goalkeeper.

Asked about the veteran German’s departure from Arsenal, Arteta hinted that Leno couldn’t adapt to the style of play the Spaniard is asking from his side.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of his team’s opening Premier League game against Crystal Palace on Friday night, Arteta said (according to

“It ended up being just a professional relationship with Bernd, which was difficult to maintain. I spoke to him last night and it’s a man who will be remembered here. In football, you have to make decisions to play like that, as you wish.” Bernd has found a move that he is really happy with and we wish him all the best.”

A model professional. Kudos to the Arsenal. Thanks for everything and good luck, Bernd ❤️

Arsenal number one Aaron Ramsdale sends classy message to Bernd Leno after German exit

Ramsdale’s excellent form last season meant Leno was given very little playing time. The England goalkeeper is hoping to become his country’s first choice at this year’s World Cup.

The shot-stopper, 24, has taken over as number one in the squad vacated by Leno, an honor that has clearly humbled the former Sheffield United star. Ramsdale told Arsenal’s official website:

“I am very proud and honored to have this extremely prestigious number. Some of the all time greats have worn this jersey and hopefully I can emulate how they have performed on and off the pitch and also add a twist to my personality as well.”

“I wish Bernd Leno nothing but happiness and greatness for your new adventure. Thank you for showing me the ropes and I hope I can hold myself as gracefully as you did in the shirt.”
