Kade Ruotolo breaks down how he approaches every fight

Kade Ruotolo and his brother Tye have quickly become two of the fastest rising stars in the submission grappling scene due to their ferocity on the mats.

On Friday October 21st, Kade Ruotolo will look to bring the same killer mentality against Uali Kurzhev on the main map of ONE on Prime Video 3: Lineker vs. Andrade.

The winner of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu vs. Sambo Classic match will leave the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia as the first ONE World Champion in Light Submission Grappling.

Ruotolo has become a firm fan favorite in grappling circles due to his easygoing nature and penchant for chasing submissions. The 19-year-old phenomenon never tries to win on points and is known for taking many calculated risks just to get there.

Most of the time he succeeds and sends the crowd into a frenzy. Team Atos’ product showed that wild instinct at the recently concluded 2022 ADCC World Championships.

Kade Ruotolo beat all his opponents to become the youngest world champion in the tournament’s history. In an interview with ONE Championship, the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) phenomenon spoke about the mindset that sets it apart from its peers:

“No matter who it is if I were to fight [MMA legend] Khabib [Nurmagomedov], my goal is to bring him down and subjugate me. You know, pass and submit. It’s always the same for everyone. And the same for my brother. For me, that was always the most realistic situation.”

ONE fans were able to witness Kade Ruotolo’s crowd-pleasing style when he took on grappling great Shinya Aoki in his promotional debut at ONE 157 last May.

Though he couldn’t get rid of the long-lived veteran, it wasn’t because he hadn’t tried.

Ruotolo threatened ‘Tobikan Judan’ with multiple submissions in various dominant positions and even executed a sick off-the-circle wall-back take that had fans on their seat edges.

He now wants to use the same aggressive style against the dangerous Russian sambo star Uali Kurzhev:

“Like I said, I’m always trying to make it into a real fight or MMA, things like that. That will be my game plan and strategy. Not being on the alert, I love playing guard and I love guard. It doesn’t translate that well to MMA and stuff like that though.”

‘Buchecha’ says Kade Ruotolo is in ‘the best phase of his career’

Even BJJ legend Marcus Almeida is impressed by what Kade Ruotolo has achieved in such a short amount of time. After all, the grappling scholar already had an impressive career vita before he was 20 years old.

The crazy thing is that the ever-evolving star isn’t even in his final form yet.

‘Buchecha’ believes Ruotolo will maintain his momentum and become ONE’s second Submission Grappling World Titleholder after Mikey Musumeci.

The heavyweight BJJ ace said in an interview with ONE Championship:

“I think it will be a very interesting fight. I’m looking forward to this fight. I’m sure it will be a great fight. I think Kade is in a very good moment, he’s in the prime of his career, he just got his black belt and he’s already putting on a show. I think that will help him go into this fight well and win the belt.”
