There are no spoilers in this review of the Netflix anime series Kakegurui Twin (2022) Season 1.
Welcome to the wonderful but absurd world of kakegurui twin, a spinoff and prequel too kakegurui – gambling addict, for those who are well charged to the manga world. The first thing that strikes you about this original net anime series is how wonderful, quirky, and absurd the premise is. Hyakkaou Private Academy hosts a school play system run by the students, resulting in a rank below them. The school’s engine is gambling, and the focus of the story is the clever and vaguely innocent Mary Saotome (voiced by Minami Tanaka) – a newcomer to the school desperate to get on top.
The premise sounds superficial and appealing, but the world of Kakegurui twin is an eerie feeling and deadly. Hyakkaou Private Academy reeks of sisterhood and brotherly principles, seeping through the characters, who group themselves based on out-of-the-way gambling dens and financial connections. Students who are in debt must register as “mittens”. They succumbed to student body pets until graduation. Once you’ve become a “glove,” it’s almost impossible to gamble to climb out of that ranking.
Kakegurui twin proposes the idea of power-hungry people in a desperate environment. New and up and coming prospect, Mary Saotome befriends a mitten named Tsuzura Hanatemari (voiced by Rina Honnizumi); together they have an all-encompassing mission; For Mary, it is said to be the leader of the gambling system, and for Tsuzura, it is said to lose “mittens” status.
The Netflix anime series is varied in style and pace as these two characters navigate a madcap academy built on power struggles and a plethora of dishonesty. In this world of gambling, for example, cheating is allowed – it’s up to your opponent to find out. Mixed with solid themes of sexual menace and a dystopian lifestyle, Kakegurui twin is easily an anime series to watch (that’s of course if there are further plans to flesh out the story and lean towards a sequel).
Whether the canon is followed I cannot argue; I haven’t delved deeply enough into the manga to understand if this original anime series will appeal to the story’s loyal supporters. However, after investing in its six chapters, there is something memorable about this story. The characters fit together well and the enemies are well marketed to the viewer.
It’s been a while since an anime series has really caught my attention. Maybe it’s the sensationalist style of storytelling or the grim world it inhabits. Either way, Kakegurui twin It’s worth tuning into Netflix, so let’s hope it tops Season 1.
