Arizona Republican nominee for governor Kari Lake refused to accept the 2022 election results on Sunday.
At the CNN host Dana Bash asked on Sunday state of the nation If Lake accepted the November election results, Kari Lake said, “I will win the election and I will accept this result.” When Bash pressed again and asked if she would accept the results if she lost, Lake repeated, “I will win the election, and I will accept that result.”
Lake was supported by the former president donald trump, and running on a platform that perpetuates Trump’s electoral fraud lies. She kept calling Joe Biden “the illegitimate president” and said that he “lost the election and shouldn’t be in the White House”.
Bash also asked: “You have called the 2020 election corrupt, stolen, lazy and rigged. There was no evidence of this presented in court… Why do you keep saying that?”
“Well, there’s a lot of evidence…People don’t trust our elections,” Lake replied.
Lake is running for governor in Arizona, a state where the 2020 election results came under intense scrutiny after speculation about the validity of ballots cast in certain counties and after President Biden won the typically Republican stronghold by a 0.3% margin would have.
Arizona has voted for Republican presidential nominees in every election since 1952, with two exceptions: bill clinton‘s 1996 win and Biden’s 2020 win.
Earlier this month, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) called Lake a threat to democracy: “If you care about our democracy and care about the survival of our republic, then … we can’t give power to people who told us they couldn’t vote.” will honor.”
Lake is one of several Trump-backed Republican candidates who will not commit to honoring the 2022 results.
That New York Times reported that Senate candidates Ted Budd in north carolina, Blake Masters in arizona, Kelly Tshibaka in Alaska and JD Vance in Ohio as well as gubernatorial candidates Tudor Dixon in Michigan and Geoff Diehl in Massachusetts, did not say they would accept the election results.
Lake will face Katie Hobbs in November in an extremely close race. In polls as of Oct. 14, Lake leads by a narrow margin.
