Kayak Fisherman Lands Big Ol’ Halibut Off The Coast Of Alaska

Well, there’s something different about someone fishing in a kayak in the ocean.

A huge body of water with creatures big enough to swallow you and the boat you’re in… it just seems more intense. Then looking for big fish seems pretty crazy.

There is a chance of being drawn anywhere and in the end when you bring the fish to the surface how do you deal with it from a kayak?

A man fishing off the coast of Alaska in Steamboat Bay found this out.

The video starts and you can see another boat, much larger, and the shoreline.

“All right, I’ll get a bite, I’ll get a bite, let it eat, let it eat. Okay folks, big fish on, big fish on.”

The man radioed the situation to someone, safety evidently thought of before he hooked a small kayak onto a monster out in the ocean.

“Oh yeah, going for a sleigh ride, that’s a big deal.”

The video continues and the fish eventually emerges. The fisherman and the people on the boat are all excited and for obvious reasons. The halibut at the end of his line must be at least half the size of his boat at first glance.

The fish keeps fighting him, getting him in the boat a couple of times, but he keeps running.

The man and the others ponder the best way to land it, forming a plan while he still catches up.

Finally the camera view changes as someone is filming from the boat.

The man reels it in nearby and the fish decides it has no more fight. The fisherman grabs it by the gill plate and, with some grunts and groans, heaves it onto the kayak.

“67 inches, almost 100 pounds. Above? Over 100 pounds. Man I was wondering if I could get him the boat but we did it.”

Impressive all around. Catching a fish like that is one thing, doing it all by yourself, in a sea kayak is a whole different animal and he really made it look pretty easy.

According to the fisherman himself, he was on a mission to catch some big fish:

“As far as I knew, there were no official kayak fisheries in Alaska that had any type of quality kayak, and I could not find any footage of big game fish being landed by kayak in the area.

So I assembled a team and set out with a mission to catch a giant halibut from a kayak and explore the effectiveness and feasibility of establishing a kayak fishing department at the lodge.”

We exceeded all of our expectations when we landed this massive 160+lb halibut on our first day fishing near the lodge.”

I gotta love it
