Oh damn no…
See, I don’t spend a lot of time kayaking North Carolina’s coastal rivers, but I don’t really plan on doing it after that.
Experienced kayaker Peter Joyce was recently paddling down the Waccamaw River when his kayak was attacked out of nowhere by a hungry alligator.
The alligator hit so hard that it knocked the kayak over, except Joyce was able to grab a branch to keep it from tipping completely upside down.
He shared his experience with WECT:
“I thought I heard a fish jumping to my left, turns out it wasn’t a fish. About a meter from the kayak I could make out the alligator’s head and that was it, I didn’t have time to react.
My mind was playing catch-up at this point. When I spotted the alligator’s head at the front end of the kayak, it was basically just a kind of shock.
Once it hit the kayak and I left what just happened? If it had hit and there was nothing to grab on my right side, I would have turned around… It could have been a lot worse.”
Just the eerie stillness of the river before the attack was enough to unnerve me.
And props to Joyce for having the rock to hack his way into the alligator’s kitchen.
As for me, I’m staying dry over here…
